What Sets AI Uncrop Apart
An engineering and creative breakdown of model performance, architecture, and practical production workflows.
Sometimes the photo is perfect but the shape is wrong: a square product shot that needs to become a website banner, or a landscape portrait that has to fill a phone screen. Cropping throws away the subject. Stretching distorts it. AI uncrop, also called outpainting or image expansion, does the opposite: it keeps every pixel you have and paints new surroundings past the edges, matching the light, perspective and texture of the original. Pick a target ratio and Cinel fills the gap.
What makes Cinel's AI Uncrop different
- No prompt required: the expansion reads the scene and continues it on its own.
- Ratios chosen for real placements: 1:1 feed posts, 3:4 and 4:3 product and editorial layouts, 9:16 stories and Reels, 16:9 banners and thumbnails.
- Two output sizes, 1280×720 and 1920×1080, for quick drafts or sharper delivery.
- Part of a chain: remove a background, restage the product, uncrop for the placement, then upscale or animate, all inside Cinel.

How to expand an image on Cinel
- Open AI Uncrop in the AI Image Edit menu.
- Upload the image you want to extend.

- Choose an output size.
- Press Generate and inspect the seams where the old and new areas meet.
- Download, or upscale and animate the expanded frame.
Picking the right ratio for each channel
| Placement | Ratio to choose |
|---|---|
| YouTube thumbnail, website hero, slides | 16:9 |
| TikTok, Reels, Stories, phone wallpaper | 9:16 |
| Instagram and Facebook feed | 1:1 or 3:4 |
| Marketplace gallery, blog image, print layout | 4:3 or 3:4 |
Tips for seamless expansions
- Leave breathing room. Images where the subject touches the edge give the AI less context.
- Simple backgrounds extend best: sky, sand, studio paper, wood, walls.
- Watch repeating detail. Text, logos, crowds and complex architecture may need a second try or a manual fix.
- Expand once, generously. One large expansion usually looks more coherent than several small ones.
- Clean up first. If the background is distracting, use the Background Remover and Image to Image to restage the product, then uncrop.
Use cases
- Ad resizing: one approved creative in feed, story and banner formats.
- Product photos that need space for headlines and price tags.
- Portraits for vertical video covers and profile banners.
- AI art and wallpapers extended to fit desktop or phone screens.
- Image-to-video prep: widen a still before animating it in 16:9.
- Fixing tight framing in travel and event photos.
AI Uncrop vs cropping vs upscaling
Cropping removes content to change the shape. Uncrop adds content to change the shape. The Image Upscaler keeps the shape and adds resolution. For a large 16:9 hero from a small square image, uncrop first, then upscale.
How AI uncrop works
When you choose a wider or taller ratio, Cinel places your original image on a larger canvas and treats the empty space as a gap to fill. The model studies the edges (horizon line, floor perspective, light direction, colour temperature, surface texture) and generates new content that continues them. Your original pixels act as the anchor, so the subject and its lighting stay exactly as shot.
Example: one product photo, four placements
Say you have a single square shot of a ceramic mug on a wooden table:
- 16:9 adds table and wall on both sides: room for a headline on a website hero.
- 9:16 extends upward and downward into a story frame, with space for a sticker or a call-to-action.
- 4:3 gives a slightly wider gallery image for a marketplace listing.
- 3:4 gives a portrait crop for feed posts and printed flyers. The result is four on-brand assets from one approved photo, without a reshoot. Run the 16:9 version through the Image Upscaler if it will be shown full-screen.
